In August 1944 the beleaguered people of Warsaw believed that liberation was at hand.
Determined to drive the Germans out, the Resistance poured thousands of armed fighters
into the streets, where for sixty-three days "The Battle for Warsaw" reged in the cellars
and the sewers and defenceless civilians were slaughtered in their tens of thousands.
Yet Stalin condemned the Rising as a criminal adventure and refused to come tho their aid,
and Poland`s Western Allies regretfully decided that there was little to done.
Rising ` 44 examines events that have been suppressed and misrepresented for over half
a century, to reveal the the true scale of a sacrifice that saw one of Europe`s ancient capitals
razed by the Wehrmacht as Soviet troops looked on.
Pivotal in the outcome of the Second World War and in origins of the Cold War,
the tragedy of the Warsaw Rising occupies a unique place in twentieth-century history.
